It appears that Washington D.C.’s Pacifica Radio affiliate is to move its studios into the heart of the media world’s biggest radio beast. Clear Channel, who not only dominates the horrible commercial radio world but also our entire lived environment via billboards, bus kiosks and their “branded cities” initiatives, may now also collect a reported $19,000 per month from WPFW 89.3 FM in studio rental fees. The treat this poses to community radio is obvious to most, just apparently not station or network management. See a full statement of concerns below and stay tuned to The People 4 PFW for more.

Is this in reference to the offices at 8455 Colesville Rd.?
this represents the privatization of cointelpro. we don’t need the feds anymore, the work of the panopticon po-po is now being done by multinational corporations.
You guys should do a show with other African Americans who have shows on Pacifica. I say that because on KPFA (in L.A.), J.R. Valray constantly complains on the air about how KPFA does not want his show to air (The Morning Mix where he frequently has ex-Panthers and others of that more militant perspective on his show). On KPFK (in San Francisco), they used to have a Saturday line-up that included Freedom Now and Spotlight Africa, Think Outside the Cage and Smiley and West. KPFK routinely took the Saturday line up off the air during its pledge drive in order to play pre-recorded programs that were not political and definitely not geared to the Black community. Now, they have basically taken all of the above mentioned programming off the air or Saturdays or they play them every other weekend. So, it seems to me that Pacific is taking a stance that Black progressive radio is unwanted. You should invite the hosts of these shows on your show and compare notes so that your respective audiences can hear what’s happening and you may find that it’s not just WPFW, but Pacifica as a whole. I think it would make for an interesting show.
